Google to Invest $15bn to Establish AI Computing Facility in the Indian Subcontinent
Google's parent company Alphabet is set to invest fifteen billion dollars for constructing an AI computing facility in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.
The infrastructure, which will be set up in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam city, is going to be a component of Google's international system of artificial intelligence hubs located in a dozen nations.
"It's the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in across the globe, apart from the US," Thomas Kurien stated at an event in the capital city of Delhi on Tuesday, noting that the financial commitment will be allocated across the coming five years.
This declaration comes at a time American President Donald Trump has been urging companies from the United States to focus on domestic investment.
India's Increasing Significance in Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure
The country has become a prime location for AI data centres. The country's affordable data pricing and swiftly increasing online population have made it a hub for AI and cloud growth for tech giants.
"The infrastructure will deliver our pioneering tech solutions to companies and individuals in the country, enhancing artificial intelligence advancement and stimulating expansion throughout the nation," commented Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.
Project Details
A definitive arrangement to complete the initiative is set to be signed soon, the Andhra Pradesh government announced.
"This represents a massive leap for the digital progression of our state, innovation, and worldwide position," stated the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.
This initiative will combine cloud and AI infrastructure with renewable energy systems and an broader fiber-optic system.
Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision
The project is part of the state government's blueprint to create 6GW of computing facility capacity by 2029.
Computing facilities are actual buildings that house the computing and networking equipment that organizations use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.
These include computer servers, memory systems and networking hardware like firewalls and routers, in addition to the required energy and climate management infrastructure to function properly.
Funding Benefits
Across Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been offering subsidised land and electricity to entice international investors.
Sector Expansion
The country's computing facility market has developed swiftly in the recent half-decade, crossing the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and approximately tripling its capability from 2019.
