A recent study indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these medications need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
